COMMERCIAL AUTO · CALIFORNIA

Commercial auto for California contractors. Book this week.

Personal auto does not cover the work van. Vehicles used primarily for business — vans, utility trucks, work trailers — belong on Farmers commercial auto (business auto), which helps with liability and damage related to covered accidents, injuries, and theft involving business vehicles — subject to the policy. A second truck, a trailer, or tools riding with the crew is that conversation — and the vehicle usually has to show up on the COI the GC asked for.

Pains we hear

Has your business changed?

New van, a trailer, tools in the truck, or a GC who wants the vehicle on the certificate — that’s when the paper stops matching the work. Tap the one that fits.

1

New van or trailer

A second truck, a plumber’s utility truck, or a trailer behind the van is Farmers commercial auto — not “add it to the homeowners policy.” If it isn’t on the policy, it isn’t on the certificate. Book this week. Bring what’s registered to the business. We’ll review which Farmers coverages apply, and what we can place.

2

Tools in the truck vs tools at the shop

GL does not cover the saws, meters, or mowers in the truck. Tools and gear riding in a utility truck are a Farmers commercial auto conversation for tools and equipment that ride with the vehicle. Tools that live at the shop / yard are a Farmers BOP / business-property question when that fit applies. Book this week. We’ll sort which conversation fits what you added, and what we can place.

3

Personal auto vs the work vehicle

Personal auto does not cover the work van. Commute coverage on a personal policy is not a shortcut for a vehicle that hauls crew, tools, or materials for the contracting business. Book this week. Bring registrations and how the vehicle is used. We’ll review which Farmers commercial auto coverages apply, and what we can place.

COI / GC wants the vehicle on the certificate

GCs and bid packets often want the work vehicle on the certificate. Schedule the vehicle on the commercial auto policy first — a COI does not create coverage or add a vehicle. If it isn’t on the policy, it isn’t on the certificate. Certificates of insurance are issued only from an in-force policy. Bring the PDF and the vehicle list. We’ll review which Farmers coverages apply, and what we can place.

Who we serve

Contractor trades with work vehicles

Contractor trades who need commercial auto — and other California businesses with work vehicles.

HVAC contractors

C-20 shops often run vans and utility trucks that haul meters, refrigerant, and crew. Personal auto does not cover that work vehicle.

Electricians

Service vans and tool trucks that roll to the job need commercial auto when the vehicle is part of the contracting work.

Flooring installers

Delivery vans and trucks that move materials and tools to the job are a commercial auto conversation — not personal auto.

Landscapers

Trailers, utility trucks, and mowers that ride with the crew — commercial auto for the vehicle; shop-stored equipment is a separate BOP/business-property question.

Plumbers

C-36 utility trucks that haul crew, tools, and materials are commercial auto — not personal auto.

Other California businesses with work vehicles

Delivery, service, and field vehicles used for business — same rule: personal auto doesn’t cover the work vehicle. Book this week for a Farmers commercial auto review.
